Sorry for not being active.  For some reason our ISP didn't give us access to DeviantArt, so we had to fix the problem by using openDNS.  Anyway, back now, and I have an update!

It's our finals week, I still have 2 more tests to go: Both are oral tests and one is for Theology, and another for Philosophy.  So, I'm gonna have to study once I post this entry.

Hope I can upload new deviations once I free up some working time. *sighs*

2 Weeks ago, we held our Thesis Proposal Exhibit.  It was entitled "1 Minute" and it was held at the SocSci Foyer in Ateneo de Manila University.  The "One Minute" Concept was thought of becuase essentially, as designers we need to get the message across in a matter of seconds.  Well, since this is an exhibit, we have at maximum one minute to deliver our statements.  

Well, not much to say about it as it is pretty self explanatory   On to pictures!

I was actually amazed at how many people made lanterns for my panel.  The idea was that the audience would make paper lanterns and hang it on the awning I made on my panel.  I actually thought no one would do it, but at the end of the week, I had to add more paper and make space for newer lanterns. anyway, It was cool, though it could've been better.  Next sem!






I was also involved in another exhibit that was held in Big Sky.  We made drawings of Filipino music icons or musical instruments.  So yeah.   Here are the pictures.





The place was full of grafitti and was just wild.

This is one heck of an overdue update.  Ah well, I've been so busy with school work (especially last week when I participated in 2 school exhibitions - I also helped in setting up as well.)  So now, I bring you my Graphika Manila update! wow!

So anyway, prior to the event, I was really excited - this was the first time I was going to Graphika Manila.  I was interested and I wanted to go the years before but I never had the opportunity - slash - no one wanted to come with me.  At least this year I got to bring a few friends along.

BUT before going to Mall of Asia, I had to drop by Ateneo to set up for the exhibit that we held.  I had to wake up extra early for that.  There I met up with Edjie (*BlackMageAlodia), Charz and Aislinn.  Charz and Aislinn rode with to MoA, while *BlackMageAlodia had transpo of her own.  When we got there, Edjie had already met up with Crissey (~Crissey) outside the Premiere Theater.  We couldn't get in because Crissey's ticket was with Rong (~gravitycircle,) who I think was giving Gine a ride (~anti00gravity.)  While waiting for them we decided to take some pictures!

The place was almost full when we had the chance to get in the theater, so we tried looking for seats.  While looking, I met a new friend! Christian (~csjwcr) introduced himself to me, though I didn't recognize him at first (sorry bro! D I was really happy to have met him (the dude's one awesome illustrator/graphic designer.)  He was also really friendly when exchanged some small talk.

So finally, we found some seats upstairs, which had a pretty decent view of the whole cinema.  We took some pictures during the presentations.

I'm kinda sad because my subbie is ending soon.  Noooo my beloved journal layouttt~~~ :c Well, since I'm going to be free (and sembreak's coming up soon) I think I can take freelance work again.  I've delayed all of my client project so long now because of school work, and I think some of them are really getting impatient. D:




Where do you guys think I should go or do during sembreak?  Do you guys know of any places that are fun YET affordable? I want to plan something with my friends, since it'll be our last sembreak together before graduation. *emo*

I guess you guys would've noticed by now that I don't update as often as I did.  Well, school's approaching finals week and I'm really swamped with school work and stuff.  I have to sacrifice a lot to go to events that I have to/want to go to.  Anyway., In line with school work, i'll be in 2 exhibitions this week.

On wednesday night, we'll be having an exhibit up in Big Sky in New Manila.  The exhibit features pencil and charcoal drawings of Philippine music icons.  Please check it out - we will also be having live music from the bands Shoulder State, Lets Go Streaking, and Earnville.   Our works will be for sale if anyone is interested in buying them.



There are a lot of things I want to rant about, but I guess i'll narrow it down to two things.  

I hate backstabbers.  The ones that have bad judgment just because they dislike someone.  The ones that give out names.  The ones that think they're better than everyone else.  The ones who will put someone down just so they can feel better about themselves.  The ones who feel like they've been left behind but try to save themselves or their feelings by talking about other people's lives.  The ones who think that everything is about them.  Go to hell.

I also hate people who assume that they're close to you (or anyone else, for that matter) - and they instantly think like you need them or something.  The people who assume that the things you tell them are ' private ' things, but in fact you tell it to every one of your friends.  The ones that say that they treat you as a friend but obviously they're trying to get something else out of it.  The ones that obviously treat you in a special way and say that they're just like that.  The ones that aren't friends with your friends, but they think they can be close to you.  The ones who think they're "special" to you but they're actually not.  The people who expect you to do a favor for them when it's really inconvenient for you.  It's annoying.  Please stop.

Now, I'm not naming any names, and I'm not really saying anything about who these people are.  Let me clarify that I'm talking in a very general way here.

So recently I've been playing Spore on my free time.  It's a game by Maxis (creator of the Sims,) and just like the Sims, it's really addictive.

In this game, you are actually creating your creatures and eventually letting them grow into bigger communities.  You start out as a cell (yep ) and make your way through the miniscule world by eating cells smaller than you (if you're  carnivore) or plants (if you're a herbivore) or both (omnivore.)  What you eat will then dictate which kind of creature you evolve into.  

Then your creature evolves a brain big enough to create tribes, then civilizations.  You can then design buildings and vehicles for your creations.  Then you get to send your creations to space to conquer galaxies - of course, in a spaceship you created. XD  The universe that you move in in spore gets bigger and bigger.

I think one of the main features that make this game so good is how you can costumize everything about  your creatures.  It has a really intelligent engine that automatically figures out how your creature can walk, eat, dance, run, jump, etc.

So I was taking a look at the games folders, and then I discovered another cool feature - the game automatically creates animated GIFs of your building process.  Isn't that cool?  Here are some of the things I created:

I'm preparing for 2 exhibits: one for my thesis class and another for my drawing class.  It's a lot of work, considering I have a philosophy paper due and a history report at the same time this week.  Man, I'm gonna die.




Last week, ~Reami visited us in ADMU   She's a deviant from Germany, and she has Filipino blood.  She was here to visit her relatives.   I'll write more about this in the next update, which will have pictures.  I guess we all had fun while she was around, but I don't know if she was really quiet or just shy.

So I've signed on to Plurk recently, and I'm getting addicted to it.  It's really hard to explain what it is, the best way is to check it out for yourself.  I guess it can be likened to a blog - but your entries are bite sized.

Last Saturday, after the <a href="Mangaholix Workshop, me, *BlackMageAlodia, ~Crissey, ~gravitycircle, and *slumberdoll had a shoot!  It was my first time posing for the camera (i usually only help with the transpo, or lights, or props )  It was fun, i felt pretty... So after the shoot, we ate a bit, and went to watch Wall E! Tricia wasn't able to join us, though :C  I was unusually tired that night, but I still enjoyed the movie.   It's really an amazing film, and quite possibly the best animated movie Pixar has made.   It's cute, too.  I really can't share anything because it might ruin the whole experience for you guys, but be sure to check it out   It's something kids and even adults could relate to.




I do a bit of work for Status magazine (if you see it around ), I usually go there on Saturday to finish up on lay-outs and revisions   We just stay in a small room, but there are a lot of interesting things here and there, so I decided to take pictures when I wasn't doing anything (sorry for the fail photography XD)

Yesterday, we went to Edsa Shangrila's Atrium to attend the Ateneo Art Awards.  We go there every year.   Anyway, this year we went to show our support to our teacher in drawing class, Christina Dy, who was one of the nominees for the award.

I'm actually surprised that there was really a lot of people who went, the place was so crowded we couldn't move from one place to another without offending other people The crowd was a general mix of a lot of different generations.

Anyway, on to the pictures.

The exhibit, of course, had the works displayed there.  (some of them were not the originals, because they were really huge.)  The works were really interesting, and there were also write-ups explaining the concept behind the artworks.  Too bad I wasn't able to get pictures of all of the artworks though.  My camera skills suck, had to take out the blurry shots (which are like 7/10 of all the pictures i took.) boo.








A lot of my friends went as well! among the attendees were *BlackMageAlodia,~Crissey, ~gravitycircle,~fdlty05,~dae-mon1, *slumberdoll, ~tsok, ~kiksology, ~13idiotbox, ~maarteng, ~chanbarariot, ~JaCyH and ~megumi00. *phew* XD


From school, we went straight to Shang.  I was the driver of Edjie, Crissey, Rong, and Erica. XD



So when we got there, we started taking some pictures, eating the snacks, drinking the wine, and pretending to be "refined" individuals of society. XD kidding.

Before everything, I wanna greet A VERY VERY VERY VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY! WOOO show him some love.


Last Saturday, because one of my HS classmates returned from the US (he stays there to study,) we had a small get together thing.  It wasn't much, but it was fun to catch up with old friends and find out how they are and what they were doing with their lives.

We had stuff to eat and played poker.

So last Thursday, July 31, since my school didn't have any classes, I went to UP to attend an event called a <a href="cosplay competition for Japfun.  I met up with *BlackMageAlodia and her sister ~orangeish there.  It was pretty fun watching all the cosplayers with their skits, and there were some familiar faces/costumes in the competition as well.  Luckily, I brought my camera to document the event, sorry for the blurry pictures, though, the place was dark and my noob photography skills and lame hands couldn't take crisp pictures

I personally liked Spawn Mandarin his armor was really cool. I also wanted to post a picture of the Godzilla cosplay, too, but he was black, and the stage BG was black, so when I took a picture all that was registered by the camera was black, then creating a warpgate to another dimension. D: Yeah, It was weird. : )  The Godzilla cosplay made me laugh, though.





So okay, I can feel the schoolwork starting to pile up now, and I can't help but feel like i'm getting lost.  I'm also doing some work outside of school, so that kinda takes my free time away as well.  Ah well.  That's life.

I have a headache that wont go away.  I've had it for 3 days now and I thought it was because of my lack of sleep, but i guess it's because of something else. help. D:

I just watched "You Dont Mess With the Zohan" starring Adam Sandler with *BlackMageAlodia and ~fdlty05.  



I guess it was okay, gave me a few laughs, but it wasn't anything unexpected coming from Adam Sandler.   There were really some funny parts, but there were parts where I felt that the movie was trying just a bit too hard to be funny, and those parts would drag.  Anyway, it's still a cool movie if you want a few laughs and if you don't want to watch anything very serious or cerebral.




I eat a lot.  I like food (who doesn't ) so might as well share what I ate a few days ago (well I brought a camera with me, but it ran out of battery after taking a few shots.  Ah well, I wanted to take more.)

So I was in Teriyaki Boy (no i'm not getting paid to write this) and it's one of my favorite restaurants.  I don't know why but I just like it there.   I should stop going there too often though, or i'd lose tons of money eating that food. D:

Yup, i'm obviously, i'm a bum anyway, so today was a pretty slow day for me, I didn't have breakfast or lunch because I wasn't feeling hungry anyway, so I had a pretty big dinner, and I just had a huge midnight snack.

Now, I don't know much about nutrition, but I think that's a pretty messed up eating schedule.

Anyway.  On to what I have on mind.





Lately i've noticed that i'm not playing my PSP as much as I used to.  I guess after God of War and FF: Crisis core, there weren't new games that appealed to me as much.  Do you guys have any suggestions? Anyway, here are the games I plan on playing, hopefully some feedback from you guys too:

Silent Hill

So I've played the first few minutes of this game from a friend's PSP, but I never really got into the game.  I promised myself that i'll get back to playing the story, but I guess I got lazy trying to look for this game

Final Fantasy Tactics

Yup, my friends recommend me to play this game, as I've never ever played it before.



I wish that by next year, they'll release awesome games:

Man, GT was announced in 2004 but hasn't been released yet.  They say they're working on it again, but I don't know



Right now, i'm just playing a few games on my PSP, and usually I just do it to pass the time.  Here are a few:

Monster Hunter Freedom 2

Yeah, this game can get addicting I should reallve convert my file into 2nd Gen already, though. XD  If i have 30 minutes to spare or so, It's the perfect time to slay a wyvern.  woo!  I play this game with ~amarande,~beramonde, and ~gravitycircle.  I hope I can play it with more people - coz multiplayer makes things fun.

Space Invaders Extreme

This one's a classic, like playing a nintendo game on the PSP on acid.  I like the simplicity of it, but it still hooks me.





There are 3 PC games I'm really really waiting for.  These are:

Spore

This game looks so interesting - and weird.  I don't know what to make of it, they've only released the creature creator.. so.. hm.  I guess i'll just have to wait to find out.

Starcraft 2

I was really a fan of Starcraft, and Brood War.  I remember losing sleep playing this, creating new strategies, debating with friends over what to do during certain situations, learning new combos and tactics.  I really hope they retain the whole Starcraft feel - I think they'll ruin the game if they add a Hero element in skirmishes. :c

Diablo 3

Yup, looks like we're gonna have to wait 2 more years before this bad boy comes out.   Hopefully, we all have new PCs by then.  Woo Hoo!

So I watched Batman: The Dark Knight on it's opening day along with a few id majors - *BlackMageAlodia,~Onigino, John, Nigs, Kenneth and Sir Ali (I don't know their devids ) Man.  It's so friggin awesome.

I think what I liked most about the movie was the fact that the villain wasn't your typical "I want to be rich and rule all/destroy of gotham/the world."  Man, the joker's just psycho.  Heath Ledger was really good portraying him, and I think because of his performance all of the other actors performances were made even better.

I'm so tempted to spoil some of the scenes, but I know that some of you haven't watched it yet! so.. MAAAH WATCH IT D:





Having a high for the movie, I started searching for Batman related stuff.  I found the old movie posters in the internet, and I think Iíll take a while to look back on the batman movies before Dark Knight.

Batman


Here's the first Hollywood batman movie (if I'm not mistaken.)  With Michael Keaton as Batman and Jack Nicholson as the Joker It's a very straightforward poster, with the bat logo on yellow.  Old school much?



Batman Returns


The first logo is the same bat logo.  I guess they got fed up with the yellow so they made it black and white   I think it was Tim Burton who directed this one, I love how theatrical the penguin is in this movie    Oh, and Michelle Pfeifer is hot as the Catwoman The posters are all.. black and white-ish!  They made the Penguin and Catwoman so pale



Batman Forever


A green batman logo! With a questionmark! Go riddler So Robin's in this movie now!   I guess poster designs like these (the one with all the stars/characters on the poster) are quite popular when it comes to local movies They HAVE to have the entire cast in the poster, no matter what.

Look, it's a bird.. on a bat! The teaser was made red..  and they changed the logo.. well not really changed, but they added that "Robin" logo on top of the Batman logo I personally liked this movie as a kid, but looking back, I donít think I would want to see this again



Batman Begins



In Batman Begins they redesigned the logo so it looks sleeker ñ featuring sharper edges, less detail and straighter cuts to the wings at the same time not losing the whole ìBatmanî feel to it.  I think itís cool.  Here are the two movie posters they used, the second one is the international poster (the ones I saw posted around here.)

So when the teaser came out (the one with the red bat logo for the jokerís lips) I immediately got excited about this movie (design win, yea?) Now, after Iíve watched it, Iím even more excited LOL.  So here are some of the posters they created for their marketing campaign.  One with the Joker faced away from the audience, and one with batman with a burning bat sign on the building

So anyway, after getting some shots here, I wanted to take some shots of the Information Design Studio/Lab in the upper floor.  It's interesting at this time because we made posters of our ideas and stuck them to the wall for our classmates to see   There are posters EVERYWHERE!






There were also some juniors in the lab doing their production design assignments, and they didn't know that I was taking their pictures. huhahaha! This is chu-chay(sp?)!

Man, the history exam was okay, I think I did okay but I can't be so sure.  There were 2 sets, I got the easier one. Thanks ~kiksology for lending us your wonderful new Macbook Pro and notes.  They really helped a lot.

Anyway, went to drink coffee after history class with Tricia*slumberdoll.  Yay.




Last night me, Edjie *BlackMageAlodia, and our very happy friend Lester went to Fully Booked to buy some books.  On the way there, we came across something really strange in Katipunan.  It was a small Kalesa (a horse-tugged carriage).  I've never seen it before - it was probably a very confused horse.  Maybe it thought it was a car? A brown, 1 horse power car.  (yes, i'm very corny, thank you.) anyway, luckily *BlackMageAlodia brought a camera (which could only record videos) along and recorded the thing.  Here's the clip

So I came home with 2 new design books:

Both by Rockport, one book talks about logo designs, with commentaries from the authors of the book.  I think it's pretty good, as they narrate what makes the logo communicate the idea well, or what makes the logo bad.  The second book shows stationery design - basically the creating effective visual identities for brands/companies.  I think it's a very pretty book as well - only downside is that there isn't any commentary on the items shown.




Here, for your entertainment, I present to you bad visual metaphors. Hope we all could learn something from them.

1. Keep in mind how close (or far) the letterforms are.  Kern and Track the logotype well - or catastatrophes like these may happen:

I usually hate classes that require a lot of reading (especially classes which I don't even understand what i'm reading), usually because halfway through my assigned reading, my mind wanders and I'll be day (or night) dreaming about something else.  Next thing I know, i'll be in page 30 not knowing what happened in page 2-29.  So then I have to re read the whole thing.  It sucks.

So yeah.  History is one of those subjects. I dislike it.  Some of you may like it, but I can't stand it.  Anyway, I have a long test later and I just hope I understand and remember what I just read.  or else. death.  like my icon.  DEATH!

I'm planning to go to fully booked later to buy some design/art books.  Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm leaning towards typography, branding, logo, or identity design books, but I'm still not sure. Hmm. Kinda makes me excited though.  Will update tomorrow.

Everyone's so hyped about this game.  I'm excited what the new classes are going to be., too bad the necro is out, I used him the most he was pretty weak, though.

In excitement, I decided to replay Diablo 2 on my spare time. BUT I can't get it to work on my computer.  WTH.  Vista sucks.  I hope I can get a better computer (heh heh) soon.
